Job Description

 The Courier is responsible for transporting specimens, supplies, and reports in an efficient, dependable, punctual, proper, safe and professional manner.  Demonstrates LifeLabs Vision and Values in all activities.

Job Requirements




  • Deliver all reports and supplies promptly to the correct address
  • Adhere to all LifeLabs policies and procedures
  • Use proper clearly marked containers
  • Transport URGENTS in a timely manner and ensure receiving staff are aware of its arrival
  • Maintain a clean, orderly and safe working environment
  • Actively promote safety among staff
  • Be fully conversant with pertinent emergency, breakdown and accident procedures

Quality Assurance and Regulatory Compliance

  • Perform assigned activities according to current LifeLabs Policies and Procedures. 
  • Recognize discrepancies and incidents, take appropriate action and escalate accordingly.
  • Stay informed and comply with all safety regulations as they relate to the work environment (i.e. WHMIS, TDG).
  • Keep up to date with information shared through different modes of communication (i.e. memos, Policies, Standard Operating Procedures).




  • Communicate relevant information to Senior, and/or Client Services and/or Logistics Manager
  • Convey relevant information to any other courier who services the same client
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with internal and external clients


  • Must hold valid class G driving license in Ontario or valid Class 5 driving license in BC
  • Drive defensively, and maintain a good driving record
  • Report any traffic violations to the Logistics Manager immediately
  • Follow designated route schedule
  • Inform Senior, and/or Logistics Manager of any proposed route changes
  • Set priorities on route and schedule when necessitated by weather and/or traffic conditions

Vehicle Maintenance

  • Circle check vehicle daily
  • Notify appropriate personnel of any maintenance requirements the vehicle may need immediately
  • Ensure vehicle is kept tidy at all times
  • Ensure that all safety equipment is present and accounted for

Client Relations

  • Represent the company as the main point of contact with the client
  • Adhere to the company dress code
  • Be attentive to clients’ needs and concerns, notify appropriate contacts as necessary
  • Maintain a neat professional image through appearance and behavior


  • Maintains confidentiality involving any information made available directly or indirectly about clients including physicians, patients, employees and the company
  • Be available for different shifts, and fill in for absent couriers, as required
  • Be familiar with several routes and schedules

Environment, Health & Safety

  • Every worker is to work in a manner that protects his or her own health & safety as well as the safety of those co-workers and others. Workers are to work in a manner that is consistent with the law and with safe work practices and procedures established by LifeLabs. In accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act & Regulations, Section 28:


(1)  An employee shall,

(a)  work in compliance with the provisions of this Act and the regulations;

(b)  use or wear the equipment, protective devices or clothing that the employees’ employer requires to be used or worn;

(c)  report to his or her employer or manager the absence of or defect in any equipment or protective device of which the worker is aware and which may endanger himself, herself or another employee; and

(d)  report to his or her employer or manager any contravention of this Act or the regulations or the existence of any hazard of which he or she knows.


(2)    No employee shall,

(a)  remove or make ineffective any protective device required by the regulations or by his or her employer, without providing an adequate temporary protective device and when the need for removing or making ineffective the protective device has ceased, the protective device shall be replaced immediately;

(b)  use or operate any equipment, machine, device or thing or work in a manner that may endanger himself, herself or any other employee; or

(c)  engage in any prank, contest, feat of strength, unnecessary running or rough and boisterous conduct.

Minimum Education:                      High School Diploma or equivalent

Professional Registration:           Requires full valid Ontario Class G Driver’s license (Ontario), or full valid Class 5 BC Driver’s license (BC), clean driving abstract


Experience:                                      A minimum of 3 years driving experience with a full valid Driver’s License

                                                            Professional driving experience is an asset

Regular Hours &

Location of Work:                           Various locations, any shift (daytime and nighttime), and any day of the week (Monday to Sunday)


Working Environment:                 Deals regularly with automobiles and transportation of biohazardous materials

                                            Ability to lift and/or maneuver up to 50 pounds:  some heavy lifting will be involved

                                            Ability to work in a fast paced environment and follow and adhere to route schedules

                                            May include working in confined spaces

                                            May include substantial walking, and going up and down stairs

                                            Local frequent stops and/or provincial highway driving
